Well, you’re about to start a blog. Without a doubt, you don’t want to write a lot of content just for fun. I bet your goal is to get some revenue. So, you likely wonder, how making money blogging?
One day I asked myself the similar question. Fortunately, over time, I managed to create a blog with about 200K unique visitors per day and over $15K/month revenue. Perhaps these figures don’t look impressive for you, but everything depends on the niche you choose. Besides, I’m only talking about the passive income. There remains a lot of ways of monetization.
Furthermore, I was working in the entertainment niche with a terrible conversion. There are a lot of areas where it is enough to generate only 10K unique visitors per day to earn more money. But since your goal is money, I don’t think you want to read some author’s article, who has no experience in practice. That’s why I share some data about my results with you.
Nonetheless, we will have to talk about theory in this blog post since all the rest data on my blog are all about the practice.
Therefore, I want you to get acquainted with the list of questions you desire to know the answers to.
- Why blogging?
- Blogging benefits
- How much money can I earn?
- How much money should I spend?
- How long does it take?
- How to start?
- What to write about?
- Which blogging platform to use?
- How to monetize and what to sell?
- Where to move next?
Now you know what this article about is. So, if you are an experienced webmaster and thereby you know the answers to all the questions above, I’d suggest you read more advanced articles on the subject such as:
- How to start an online business with no money from scratch
- What Is SEO Copywriting And How To Apply This Technique In Practice
- How to Increase Blog Traffic Up To 200K Unique Visitors Per Day
- How To Start A Blog With Revenue Over $15K a Month From Scratch
Otherwise, let’s get it started. However, I want to warn you. Don’t click on the links above if your blog doesn’t receive at least 1,000 unique visitors per day. In such a case, you are not ready to understand the data in the blog posts presented above. Take a look at the basics first.
There are a lot of ways how making money in both online and offline business. But, as a rule, all the people who think about how to increase their income comes to blogging. I don’t claim that such a position is wrong. On the contrary, blogging is one of the best profession in the world. But I want you to know the issues you should face on the way. So, read these data before starting your blog.
- Blogging is not easy if you are not an expert
- If you don’t possess enough motivation, it’s not your way
- There are only a few well-known bloggers; thus, this job is not for everyone
- It’s necessary to know the basics of HTML/CSS/JS if we are talking about money
- Do you want passive or active income?
- Are you ready to work all the day long?
- Are you prepared to fail with your first blog?
If you’re not afraid of all these things, I think that blogging is your way.
But let’s talk a bit about the items above.
It’s better to be an expert
Most successful bloggers are the experts in their respective niches. That’s why they work with ease. They don’t need to invent the topics for their next blog posts. On the contrary, these guys enjoy their profession. In other words, you must possess some profession to succeed in blogging.
Let me give you some examples of the professions that ideally fits blogging.
- Designer (interior, landscape, web, etc.)
- Photographer (retoucher)
- CGI animator
- Sound engineer (Apple Logic, FL Studio, Steinberg Cubase, etc.)
- Video engineer (Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, etc.)
- You have a hobby
- You like to travel
- You love pets
- Your passion is beauty & fitness
As you may see, you must be successful in real life to prosper online.
However, if you have a hobby, I bet you can monetize your interests with blogging. On the other hand, it doesn’t matter do you have a hobby or not. I want you to know that you need to share some experience with your readers/viewers.
You need to realize that it’s not interesting for your visitors to read about your everyday life or watch the photos. Your visitors demand some expert opinion, no matter what the subject is.
You need motivation
Blogging doesn’t work without motivation. The problem is that Google doesn’t reward you with organic traffic in an instant. You need some time to achieve success. We will talk about this aspect later.
The only thing I want you to realize right now is that you must infect your readers/viewers with motivation. In other words, you must engage your target audience and don’t give up even if your first attempt was unsuccessful.
As a result, blogging is all about the motivation. You need to forget about the bad mood if you decided to start a blog.
This job is not for everyone
How many successful bloggers do you know? I don’t think that more than ten. As a result, you must be ready for obstacles along the way. The primary barrier on your way is competition. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best in your area, there are a lot of rivals in your niche.
I do not want to frighten you. On the contrary, if your goal is money, you don’t need to be afraid of the difficulties. You will have to step into the world of blogging with open eyes.
The basics of HTML/CSS/JS
You can’t make money blogging if you don’t know the basics of HTML/CSS/PHP/JS. If you want to close this web page right now, please, do it. I don’t want to lie to you since your target is money.
Even to implement the AdSense code you need to be acquainted with HTML, CSS, and PHP. Otherwise, you won’t be able to modify your layout.
But please bear in mind, you don’t need to attend paid courses to learn the basics. It should be enough to visit this website.
Passive or active income
I bet that while talking about blogging, you imply the passive income. But there are a lot of ways to monetize the organic traffic you never heard about.
However, most likely, you just want to create the blog posts and don’t care about money. That’s why I want to convince you to use Google AdSense. But you’re free to use any affiliate marketing program to get more revenue as well.
Are you ready to work all the day long?
Unlike offline business, you must be online 24 hours a day. I don’t mean that you don’t need to sleep. Nonetheless, I give you a hint that you must be ready to react to the situation instantly.
The website I was talking about at the beginning of this article was news related. As a result, my goal was to notify my visitors about the news reports at any time. Sometimes, I was forced to forget about sleep and post another article on my blog to be the first one who revealed the exciting news. Such a schedule allowed me to compete with the business sharks.
So, you must be ready for irregular working hours.
You must be ready for the first defeat
Google Panda has hit my first blog. My second project had suffered from Google Penguin. My last project has received a penalty because of Google Fred.
Google is always updating its algorithms. No-one can insure you against the defeat. Even if you managed to create the best blog in the world, you must realize that you fight against the AI.
So, please, don’t be so naive, if we are talking about the money. You want to earn a lot of money. So you must be ready to compete with the serious guys, who can use illegal methods to fight with you once you have become famous.
But, still, there are a lot of benefits to be a blogger. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Several of you stopped reading or opted to scroll down to the benefits right away. But if you’re a freshman, I want you to learn first about the cons of blogging before starting reading about the pros.
I claim that blogging is the work of dream. I wasn’t able to find any other job which could make me free. To be a genuine blogger means never being at the same place. If you like to travel and earn money along the way, blogging is what you need.
Let’s now take a look at the blogging benefits:
- You work when you want
- You do your job where you want
- It’s easy to combine work and travel
- You have no boss
- Everything depends on you (your risks as well)
- Your business is available 24/7
- You’re at the edge of technology
- It’s the long-term perspective
- You have the passive income
- Blogging is a stable work
I don’t want to focus your attention by revealing more about the benefits. Your goal is to earn money. Therefore, let’s move to the things you want.
How much money can I earn?
Unlike other authors who write about blogging and money, even those who have big names, I earned my income while creating the blogs. I don’t sell any info products. I don’t have my goal to get you in my row of followers. I’m the one who made blogging my everyday job. That’s why I know how it really works in practice.
I know that the primary reason why you’re reading this article is that you want to define how much money you can earn while blogging. You need the exact data. You are tired of the figurative estimates. Well, I have what you want.
However, you need to realize that everything depends on your niche. Indeed, you can earn only $30 per day, having 100,000 unique visitors daily. On the contrary, it’s enough to generate about 1,000 uniques per day in another area to win $100 a day.
I can reveal you the exact data which I gathered thanks to the niches I have been working in.
It’s the most common practice to start a travel blog. It may look surprising, but this niche is profitable. You can convert 1,000 visitors per day into about $500-750/month. So if you were lucky to garner about 10,000 unique visitors to your travel blog every day, you could earn about $5-7.5K/month.
However, if we are talking about the travel niche, everything depends on your country. So, if you’re living in Eastern Europe, I doubt you earn more than $1K/month having about 10,000 unique visitors each day.
If you want to generate more revenue, you must work in the following micro niches.
- Caribbean cruises
- Debit/Credit Card for travel
- Travel insurance
- Luxury hotels
If you were lucky to succeed in one of the niches presented above, you might earn much more money.
Please bear in mind, I’m talking about the passive income. If you have a partnership with any travel agency, your income might increase.
You may have guessed that this niche is hugely profitable. However, also worth noting that the Jewelry niche is the area with high competition. You have no chance to compete in jewelry with business sharks like it was in the travel niche. This niche requires thousands of backlinks. Meanwhile, your profit could be above praise.
So, if you have chosen the jewelry area for your blog, the more profitable micro niches are the following:
- Engagement rings
- Promising rings
- Precious stones
- Diamonds (especially the so-called “Conflict-free diamonds”)
As for the possible revenue, it hugely depends on a visitor and your ad buyers. A consumer who visits your website could be interested in purchasing a ring which cost $300K. That’s why I recommend you use the affiliate marketing in addition to the passive income.
I managed to find a thin micro niche in jewelry, which allowed to earn about a $1.5-3K / month from every 1,000 unique visitors per day.
This niche is not profitable if we are talking about the price for a single click. However, you have a chance to gather a considerable amount of the organic traffic. A micro niche in the entertainment area allowed me to garner up to 200,000 unique visitors per day. So, it’s about $500-600 a day, and over $15K monthly.
But you must have enough experience to compete in the entertainment niche since your rivals are the large media outlets.
However, if you’re an experienced journalist, you might become a successful blogger.
What blog to start in this niche?
- Movies & TV
- A fan site
Summing up, there is no top edge of your incomes. However, I want to warn you about the bloggers who share their revenue with you. As a rule, they lie since they have no experience in practice. Don’t believe any screenshots, including those belonging to me, even given the fact that I don’t lie to you.
The reason is that everything is rapidly changing in the new era of Google. Seven years ago, it was easy to earn money while cheating Google. Today, the search engines are smarter. No-one will share the working methods with you. But I will since I teach you the so-called white-hat SEO.
One more time, everything depends on your niche. If you were lucky to garner 200K unique visitors per day in the medicine, I claim you can earn over $1 million annually. But I doubt that you will be able to survive among the business sharks in such a niche.
How much money should I spend?
The beauty of blogging is that you can spend almost no money to start a blog. Of course, you need some investments to purchase a domain and hosting. However, in fact, that’s all you need.
Nevertheless, bear in mind, that your expenses depend on your experience.
I wrote an article on the subject how to start a blog with no money from scratch. Of course, I suggest you read this blog post since it contains the detailed instruction how to do it with minimum outlay.
In a nutshell, I want you to get rid of your shared hosting and use the cloud hosting provider instead. You can spend only $5/month for your hosting plan if you follow my instructions how to tune it up. Also, you need to purchase a domain.
In total, all you need is about $75 annually. Are you ready for such an outlay? I bet you are. So, let’s move forward.
However, before doing it, I want you to know why I don’t recommend you to use free hosting platforms.
- You can’t set up your web server manually
- You aren’t able to control your platform
- As a result, you can’t embed your ad code
If we are talking about how to make money blogging, the only solution is to use the self-hosted platform. Forget about all the free ways to start a blog. You will never earn money in such a case.
How long does it take?
In fact, it’s a complicated question, which, generally speaking, have a short answer. Don’t wait for any result within half a year. But, in any case, you must be ready that it takes time to earn money from your blog.
If we are talking about the PPC monetization like Google AdSense is, the minimal amount of payment is equal to $100. I doubt that you could earn such revenue earlier than within five-six month starting from the moment when you started the blog, in the case if you are a newbie.
If you already have a blog, you’re earning some revenue. No doubt you want to increase it. However, it’s a subject of another article.
I want all the beginners to know that the only way to make money blogging is to wait.
Let’s take a look at the stages your blog need to pass to allow you get your first payment from Google.
- You register a domain
- Now it’s time to tune up your web server
- You need after to choose and install a CMS
- You need to write at least 100 blog posts
- If you work in a niche with high competition, you need to take care of the backlinks
- Your website may exist in the so-called “sandbox” also called the “supplemental index” within 3-4-6 months
- Now it’s time to receive your first organic traffic
- Next, you need to submit your website to Google AdSense
- Wait for moderation
- Place the AdSense ad block into your page
- Overcome the payment threshold of $100
- Wait for a month before receiving your first payment
As a result, you must be ready to wait at least half a year. Of course, the things could be more optimistic in your case. But if you don’t want to lose the motivation, it’s better to be ready for the worst scenario.
Summing up, any online business has its payback period similar to those in the offline. So get ready for the extended period of waiting. Also worth noting that in the case of offline business, it usually takes about three years to recoup costs. Thus, the period of waiting if you are a blogger is incomparable with that which expects you in the offline.
How to start?
I wrote a lot of starter blog posts on the subject. Therefore, I want you to read them. You need to scroll top in order to follow the links since I don’t want to duplicate my content. However, in any case, I want to show you the first steps.
You may find the same list in my blog post about how to start the online business with no money from scratch. But since I can’t leave this section empty, I’d like to repeat the list here.
How to start blogging:
- Learn the basics of HTML/CSS/PHP/JS (follow this link)
- Invent a unique idea
- Purchase a domain which correlates with your primary idea
- Set up your web server
- Choose the platform for your blog
- Create the semantic core
- Write a bunch of articles
- Optimize your pages for search engines
- Take care of your backlink profile (in the case of high competition)
- Get your first organic traffic
- Submit your website to Google AdSense
- Wait for a while
- Start receiving your first revenue
In theory, all these options look apparent and accessible. However, in practice, each step hides danger.
Now it’s time to talk a bit about SEO. I’m about to convince you to learn more about the search engine optimization since it was my way to success. Of course, you can use paid advertising for your blog. But given the fact that you are reading this article, you want to generate the organic traffic and receive the passive income. You can’t cope with such a task having any idea about SEO. My goal is to teach you this discipline. In fact, my entire blog is about SEO.
So, you will have to dig deeper to figure out how to optimize your website for search engines. Fortunately, all my tips are totally free. You can find a lot of techniques which you might apply in practice on my SEO blog. Furthermore, I claim that my methods do work. In addition, I want to assure you that you can’t make money with your blog with no knowledge about SEO. Thus, my mission is to convince you to learn more about the subject.
No matter what approach of monetization you are going to use, the only way to succeed in the Google SERP is to optimize your website for the search engines. However, it would be reasonable to note that you can use paid ads combined with SEO techniques as well.
What to write about?
I have already given you some hints about several micro niches. However, the primary topic of your blog depends on your interests. My goal is to show you the exact opportunities.
Well, let’s take a look at this guy, Jamie Frater. He has launched a successful project called the Listverse. His blog thereby is about the TOP lists in the various subjects.
According to the estimates, his organic traffic costs about half a million dollars ($USD 494K).
The reason for his success is that he was the first who started writing about the TOP 10 of “something.” Thanks to the unique idea, the content of his blog have become viral, and Jamie managed to obtain thousands of backlinks to his web project.
I stumbled upon a woman while browsing the Internet who owns a network consisting of about 100 websites. Each blog covers a single niche and contains minimum 350-500 articles. Just imagine the amount of work done by this woman to launch so many sites, on a pair with her husband.
There is no universal pill to generate the ideas. The only advice I want to give is to focus your attention on a micro niche. I wrote a lot about it in the articles described above.
Summing up, it doesn’t matter what you write about. Your goal is to find the target audience. Of course, there are knowingly profitable niches such as medicine for instance. However, you must be ready to compete with business sharks in such an area of interests. It would be better to discover a micro niche without competition. In such a case, your waiting won’t be so long. You might start earning money immediately.
For instance, if I had experience in yoga or fitness, I might become a millionaire since all these websites about healthy food, diets, sports, fitness, and yoga are incredibly popular, especially among the women.
Which blogging platform to use?
There are a lot of free blogging platforms which could also be used as a self-hosted solution. However, in my opinion, WordPress is the platform which differs from all the rest. The reason is that this CMS is easy to install as well as to learn.
WordPress is the platform for about 75 million websites. This CMS allows a webmaster to simplify the process of writing, optimizing, and publishing of the articles. In addition, this CMS is made for SEO. I launched all my web projects using WordPress. However, you may choose Joomla or Drupal depending on your needs.
I wrote two blog posts on the subject. I’d recommend you to read these articles to find out why I think that WordPress might meet all your demands.
The second article is the comprehensive guide to the things you need to do to optimize your WordPress installation for search engines.
To be honest, I was trying to launch some projects using Joomla and Drupal. The latter is complicated even for me. The first one complicates a lot of processes which seem intuitive in WordPress.
On the other hand, I want to warn you that WordPress is a bulky CMS. To use it for the self-hosted solution, you will have to tune it up correctly.
I don’t recommend you any free blogging platform since thereby you exclude the possibility of monetization. At the same time, it’s effortless to build your target audience thanks to the LiveJournal, Tumblr, Medium, etc. However, in the long-term, I strictly recommend using the self-hosted solution with the WordPress installed.
How to monetize and what to sell?
Finally, we came to the main topic of this article. Now it’s time to figure out how to make money blogging.
In fact, aside from the passive income, there are a lot of ways of monetization. Let’s take a look at the most popular of them.
- Direct advertising
- Affiliate marketing
- To sell various Info products and digital content
- Guest posts for money
- You can sell physical products
- Blogging is the best way to sell services
- Passive income thanks to the PPC, CPA, CPM, etc.
Direct advertising is what you need after all. When your blog is popular, there are a lot of ad buyers interested in your target audience. No matter do you own a typical blog or a video blog, the best way to earn money is to deal with the potential ad buyers directly.
Most of the success stories are about such way of getting revenue. But, honestly, I don’t believe in it. Do you need to know why? I’ll explain it later.
Nonetheless, you must be ready for the direct ad buyers, and your blog should be prepared for them as well. The best way to sell ads is branding. So, for instance, if your website is about movies or TV, you might create the full-lengths background with the promo material of the feature-length film or a television series.
This type of advertising was popular in the 90s through 2000s. It was the golden age of the online business. It was easy money, generally speaking. However, such an approach works currently as well.
The primary idea is to sell someone’s goods to get a share of revenue. As a rule, your share could be a 15-45%, depending on your sponsor. There are the monsters of affiliate marketing such as Commission Junction. But today, most webmasters cooperates with AMAZON.
Info products and digital content
If we are talking about various digital products, this is what all the gurus adore. Each time when someone is about to teach you online business, his or her primary purpose is to sell you some info product.
As a rule, we are talking about such digital products as:
- Online courses, classes, etc.
- Access to the premium content
- Photo, audio, video content
- Apps, Add-ons, Plugins, Themes for various CMS
However, if you want to start a blog to promote your digital content, I’d suggest you use paid online advertisement instead since you won’t need to wait for customers half a year in that case. Paid advertisement such as Google AdWords allows you to get the instant traffic on your website. Another good solution is to combine paid and organic traffic from Google and other search engines.
If you have enough organic traffic, some company or even famous brand might be interested in writing a blog post about their product or service in order to place it on your website. It’s a widespread practice which is applied by the vast majority of media outlets.
But you have no chance to get such clients if you have just started your blog. One more thing I want you to be warned about is that Google can punish your clients for the guest blogging since their primary goal is to receive the DoFollow backlink from your website. As a result, you must be extremely accurate while providing such a service for your potential clients.
Selling physical products
If you have some physical product for your target audience why don’t sell it to them? For instance, I love the tube amplifiers. However, I don’t know how to create the one. Perhaps you don’t know, but the tube amp is, as a rule, a hand-made product, if we are talking about the quality.
Let’s imagine; some experienced engineer launches a blog about the tube amplifiers. I’m the potential buyer of his products. I have never seen any paid ads of tube amplifies while browsing the internet. But I may stumble upon some specific forum or a blog on the subject. In such a case, I see a lot of ads about the DIY tube amps. Isn’t it a micro niche for the blog whose owner desires to sell the physical products?
Selling services with your blog
Another option how to monetize your blog is to sell services. However, in such a case you must prove to your target audience that you’re an expert.
For instance, you know French, German, or even rare Russian language. Let’s imagine you’ve invented a unique method to learn the foreign language for just one month. I think it’s a good idea to sell your classes using your blog.
I know a lot of guys who work in the travel niche which consult their visitors how to reduce their expenses for another trip. Everything thereby depends on your idea.
Finally, we discuss my favorite topic. Yeah, I’m talking about the passive income since I consider such a way to generate revenue as the best one among all the rest.
Google introduced its Pay Per Click program called AdSense back in 2013. This online service has changed the world. I don’t claim that Google AdSense is the first PPC program. On the contrary, there were a lot of them; Double Click has been just an excellent example. However, thanks to the enormous investments and global ties, Google managed to lift this kind of business into another level.
As a result, Google AdSense is the primary revenue source for the most renown media outlet as well as bloggers all-around the world.
All you need to do is to place a piece of JS code on your PHP/HTML page and enjoy the instant earnings. But please don’t mislead yourself thinking that Google AdSense is the simplest way to make money. At first, you will be likely earning some cents. However, AdSense is the dominant instrument which allows you to receive revenue with no boundaries. All you need is to gain more organic traffic in your niche.
Where to move next?
Finally, I want to discuss your next steps. Let’s imagine; you’ve learned how making money blogging. But you want to increase your income. There are just two possible scenarios to achieve the goal.
- To buy traffic
- To get the organic traffic for free
Both ways are effective. But since your goal is to make money using your blog, I bet you more interested in the organic traffic.
The simple answer to your question is that you need to learn SEO since the search engine optimization is the only way to increase your visibility in Google and other search engines.
Fortunately, my SEO blog is all about this matter. There are a lot of useful and entirely free instructions how to improve your SEO visibility and generate more traffic. You can study my and other blogs on the subject.
However, I want to tell you only one thing in favor of my SEO blog; all the technics and methods I use are proven in practice. On the other hand, other authors could have enough experience in SEO as well.
But I want you to know that now you need to change your search queries in Google. You don’t need to find the data about online business or digital marketing. Your goal is to type the keyword SEO in the Google search string and explore all the subjects related to this query.
The only issue you may face along the way is that only some authors are capable of giving you the exact recommendations what to do to increase your organic traffic, improve your SEO visibility, optimize your website speed, etc. So, I strictly recommend you to explore my SEO blog to discover a lot of stuff on the subject.
Please bear in mind that this article is only the introduction to the world of SEO and online business. If you want to know more, I gave you some links at the beginning of the article as well as inside it.
There are a lot of ways how to make money blogging. But my goal is to convince you to use SEO for this purpose. Of course, you can explore other approaches. But, eventually, you’ll realize that the only way to earn money online is to optimize your website for search engines since only this tactic works in the long-term.
I hope that all the tips you discover on my SEO blog will be useful for you. For now, I want you to realize that there are two principal obstacles along your way:
- Search algorithms
To cope with both these tasks, you will have to study SEO. Thank you for reading. Good luck!
