Ponti Design Studio presented a conceptual design for an electric double-deck tram. This unmanned model will be run in Hong Kong. A giant vehicle called Island is equipped with large round benches inside, with passengers sitting face-to-face, noting that their tram was specially designed for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The curved windows of Island and the transparent top allow sunshine to pass through the day and also allow passengers to enjoy the night view of the city. According to the website, the interior is smooth and comfortable, with coal gray walls, soft seats, wooden floors and natural trim. The island received the GIDA Design Award 2020.
The authors of the concept hope that Hong Kong residents will use public transport more than cars. Dezeen reports that citizens have been actively avoiding buses and trams since the beginning of the pandemic. "This is particularly important in densely populated Hong Kong, where social distance is difficult to reach," reported Andrea Ponty, an Italian designer, in an interview.
