SK hynix provided a 108 megapix image sensor designed for mobile devices. A new solution would allow a South Korean manufacturer to compete better with popular producers such as Samsung and Sony, who already have similar and even more advanced products in their portfolio.
The presentation of the Hi-A811 sensor took place on 6 October at the SEDEX 2022 exhibition in Seoul; for the first time, SK hynix introduced the resolution sensor, the number of pixels has more than doubled since the launch of the 50-megapixel version, which was developed and presented a year ago.
Today, the sensor market is expanding, as cameras are not only used in mobile devices such as smartphones; they are finding new applications, including home electronics and household appliances.
One of the leaders is Samsung, which not only presented a 108-megapixel sensor last year, but also a 200-megapixel sensor, in which it fuelled competition with Sony, which accounts for about 40% of the relevant market.
In 2020, SK hynix ranked seventh in the camera sensor supplier rating, with a share of about 2%, but the company is steadily strengthening its position, including a smartphone with its 50-megapixel sensor, Galaxy A-235G, released Samsung Electronics at the beginning of the year.
