Kioxia announced the world ' s first operating prototypes of microSDXC memory cards with a capacity of 2 Tbyte. This is the maximum allowed amount of the standard; the storage device was manufactured using the biCS FLASH 3D signature flash memory and the own development controller.
The memory of smartphones, action cameras, and handheld game consoles is constantly growing, thus indicating the need for memory cards of an enlarged capacity, as stated in the company ' s press release. More than a decade has passed since the SD Association released the SDXC card specification, but so far the maximum storage capacity according to 2 Tbyte ' s container standard has not been released.
Kioxia's prototypes were based on 16 1 Tbit memory crystals, with a maximum thickness of 0.8 mm in the area of fixation, which makes them the best choice for high capacity storage devices. Mass production of 2 Tbyte MicroSDXC cards is about to start in 2023. The estimated retail price has not yet been reported.
