European cellular operators will jointly launch a holographic video link

European communication operators Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone, together with Matsuko, a holographic technology developer, formed an alliance to launch a hologram-style mobile video call service.

Last year, Cisco introduced Webex Hologram technology, which provides video links using three-dimensional images of the participants in a video conference, which requires updated reality glasses. Matsuko plans to create an analog of this solution in a mobile format, and communication operators seek to make a holographic video link as simple as normal voice calls.

Matsuko has proposed a technology that is available for implementation as an Android, iOS, or Windows application. With the help of operators, a platform will be created that integrates real and virtual worlds in mobile networks: the image from a normal 2D camera will be transformed into a 3D hologram cloud, which is broadcast to users on a virtual, complemented or mixed reality video object. Networks 5G and the high productivity of mobile devices will ensure that the holographic video link is stable and smooth.

Each participant ' s hologram is created on the basis of data from the front camera smartphone and is then broadcast in real time to other participants in the communication session, whose devices are locally drawn using 3-D branding. The image can also be applied to the real background with a VR/AR garrison. In the first phase of the test, the system has proved its functionality, now the operators are trying to ensure a stable quality of communication. It is expected that the service will be used by both customers and corporate clients.
