BMW electric vehicles will start using Chinese-made batteries close to 4680 by 2025

Chinese and Korean battery cell suppliers have so far specialized in the production of prismatic or bag type energy, while Tesla ' s market leader initially preferred cylindrical elements. According to Reuters, BMW will start using the Chinese company ' s cylindrical cells, which are close to the 4680 type, in its electric vehicles by 2025.

In the 4680 gauge, the first two digits are responsible for the diameter of the cylinder and the second for the height of the cylinder. According to Tesla, the larger than the current 2,170 cylindrical elements provide a reasonably favourable ratio between the density of charge storage and the cost. For this reason, Chinese battery manufacturers, who had previously preferred prismatic cells, are starting to look at the size of the cylinder.

According to the source, the Chinese company EVE, which is the eighth largest company in the home market, intends to supply cylindrical battery cells for the new generation of BMW electric vehicles that will be produced in the Hungarian Debrecen company by 2025.

The German car manufacturer is not going to cooperate with the EVE, because the Chinese CATL will also supply it with cylindrical batteries since 2025. German stamp representatives refused to comment on rumours, explaining that they will make a battery-related official statement in early September. It is noteworthy that the CATL plant for the production of lithium batteries will be located in Debrecene and Mercedes-Benz will receive them from the supplier to collect their electric vehicles in the neighbourhood. EVE batteries also supply Chinese XPeng electric vehicles. The first company controls not more than 2.3 per cent of China ' s traction battery market, while CATL accounts for 47.6 per cent.
