Several generations of video cards in old and new games: Who does time work for?

We take it for granted that the graphic processors of each next generation, and indeed all the other computer components, are superior to their immediate predecessors in pure speed and, even if not always, in terms of productivity to the price that is clearly reversing in recent years, but the net increase in computing power compared to the best achievements of the past is the share of flagship accelerators, and the more accessible solutions inevitably overlap with the models of the previous series. In such cases, the results of the debut reviews of the new video map cannot be considered as the last word. As a rule, it should take some time before the GPU driver, and above all the games, can use the resources of the new architecture with maximum effectiveness, and then it may be necessary to look at the device in a new light.

Fortunately, we now have the opportunity to study how the performance of a family's video cards has changed over the long term. The GPU's producers have found it increasingly difficult to conquer new computing power lines, most games have used the same branding tools since the release of API DirectX 12, and only relatively recently has the active support of ancient accelerators as much as the GeForce GTX 700 of NVIDIA and Radeon 300 of AMD ceased. We have tried to figure out how much the speed of "red" and "green" graphics processors has influenced the optimization of drivers, and have concluded that the video maps of all the series that were presented after GeForce GTX 980 Ti and Radeon R9390X have since become somewhat faster, and the most successful by improving software, contrary to popular theory, have been NVIDIA products.

We have to look at optimization on the other hand — in games that are oriented towards the ever-increasing productivity of the GPU and are gradually mastering the branding functions implemented in the iron of the new architecture — and we have taken as a basis the results of several generations of graphic maps in old games — the same ones that were used to test drivers — and compared them to what they are capable of in the current teitles.

In most of the test games, the average and minimum human resources frequencies are taken out of the individual staff rendezvous time array, which records the built-in book. The value of the minimum frame is equal to the 1st percentile of distribution. In the case where the built-in game bookmark does not provide data on the individual frame, the results of the game are used.

The old devices, whose active support has already ceased, and 22.6.1 for Legacy ASICs for AMD, were tested with the same drivers as in previous comparative reviews of the series: 516.40 and 22.6.1 of the main branch.

♪ Old games ♪

Even in the 1080p resolution tests, when only the smallest of the comparable accelerators can be fully loaded, it is evident that in the old games the ratio between old and new GPU is not the same as we used to see in modern titles. For example, among the video cards on "red" Radeon RX 580 chips, on average, is 3% slower than Radeon R9390X. Radeon RX Vega 64 develops the human frequency 67% higher than Radeon RX 580. In turn, Radeon RX 5700 XT is not so much superior to the previous GCN architecture, Radeon RX Vega 64. The advantage of Radeon RX 6600 XT before Radeon RX 5700 XT is 7% FPS, but these are related models both in the GPU architecture and in the productivity class.

For NVIDIA products, GeForce GTX 980 Ti is 71% higher than GeForce GTX TITAN. In turn, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti has raised the speed limit by another 61%. GeForce RTX 2080 is the equivalent of GTX 1080 Ti for performance in games without beaming, and its advantage over the previous generation's flagship is on average 7% of the frequency. Finally, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has won RTX 2080 around 6% of the FPS.

===Radeon R9390X===Radeon RX 580 by 6% of the average replacement frequency, and Radeon RX Vega 64 won 66% of the RX 580. The ratio between Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX Vega 64 is 17% of the FPS, while Radeon RX 6600 XT, because of the local memory device in the 6,000 series, dropped the position and exceeded the Radeon RX 5700 XT by just 4% of the frame.

The distance between GeForce GTX 980 Ti and GeForce GTX TITAN is almost unchanged at 70% of the FPS. While GeForce GTX 1080 Ti can boast a 70% advantage over GTX 980 Ti. GeForce RTX 2080 exceeds GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 4% of the speed, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, in turn, left RTX 2080 by 9% of the FPS.

===Radeon RX 570 XT===Radeon R9390X is now more than Radeon RX 580 by 8% of the average range. Radeon RX 5700 XT has increased the distance from Radeon RX Vega 64% to 18% FPS. And Radeon RX 6600 XT has not merely lost any advantage over Radeon RX 5700 XT, but on average it is less than the old 2% speed model. Only Radeon RX 580 and Radeon RX Vega 64 maintain approximately the same distance with different screen resolution, and in 4K it is 68% FPS.

GeForce GTX 980 Ti separated from GeForce GTX TITAN by 74% of the average personnel frequency, while GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, in turn, beat GTX 980 Ti by 73%. In old games, 6 Gbyte local memory is not a problem for old NVIDIA models, so the achievements of GTX 1080 Ti can only be attributed to a more powerful graphic processor. Next, there is no change in the "green" accelerators compared to the tests in mode 1440p: GeForce RTX 2080 is 4% higher than GTX 1080 Ti, and RTX 3060 Ti is 9% faster than RTX 280.

♪ New games

For Radeon R9390X, the drivers optimized to new games are no longer available, but as we have learned earlier, the Red R9390X software for "red" GPU cannot in any case boast robust productivity growth. As a result, it is the game's own preferences that best explain the fact that, in most new games, Radeon RX 580 is no less than Radeon R9390X and has achieved an average advantage of 5% FPS. The Radeon RX Vega 64 accelerator has, on the contrary, remained in the same position as Radeon RX 580 – 66% of FPS – is 66% higher. Here, the Radeon RX 5700 XT in modern games has, over time, achieved a significant increase in speed and strengthened the position from 16% to 25% FPS compared to the Radeon RX Vega 64.

Whatever the drivers are for the AMD chips, at least they allow to run almost any modern game on video cards of the old architecture. But on GeForce GTX TITAN, with the latest version of the software, they refused to launch Assassin\s Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 6 at least with the same settings used in the tests of other accelerators. In addition, Titan showed an extremely low range in DOOM Eternal. The combined results of the remaining games gave GeForce GTX 980 Ti 76% above GeForce GTX TITAN, although in the old games the difference is 71% of the frequency, and if you take into account the DOM Eternal, the advantage of GTX 980 Ti is increasing to 98% FPS.

♪ New games

In resolution 1440p Radeon RX 580 retains an advantage of 3% of the average personnel frequency over Radeon R9390X, while Radeon RX Vega 64 is still separated from Radeon RX 58067% of the FPS. Radeon RX 5700 XT has increased the advantage over Radeon RX Vega 64 from 17% to 19%: a breakthrough such as 1080p is out of the question, because the higher the screen resolution, the more efficient the old GCN architecture works. The changes in the Radeon RX 6600 XT pair and Radeon RX 5700 XT are insignificant from a practical point of view: the new model was previously 6% older, and now 4% FPS.

GeForce GTX 980 Ti, as with the 1080p resolution, did not get much faster in the new games than in the old ones, relative to GeForce GTX TITAN: the distance between the devices on the medium-frame scale increased from 70 per cent to 74 per cent FPS. However, if the results were taken into account again in DOOM Eternal, GeForce GTX 980 Ti, the difference between GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and GTX 980 Ti, which in the old games was 70 per cent, increased to 82 per cent. GeForce RTX 280 was also able to increase the distance from GeForce GTX 1080 Ti from 4 per cent to 16 per cent of the average. GeForce RTX 3060 Ti did not gain any advantage in the new games over GeForce RTX 2080 and even moved from 9 per cent FPS to 7 per cent.

In the 4K Radeon RX 580 tests, Radeon R9390X exceeded 5% of the average turnover rate, although in the old 300-series games the flagship reached its maximum advantage of 9% of the FPS. However, both devices are already very difficult to withstand this burden, and it is not surprising that the Radeon RX Vega 64 position in relation to Radeon RX 580 has been strengthened from 68% to 80% of the FPS. In addition, it turns out that in the new 4K screen Radeon RX 5700 XT games are no longer looking so good against the Radeon RX Vega 64: the advantage of the new model has been reduced from 18% to 11% of the average size. And even if one problematic game, Fry Fry 6, which undermines the total Radeon RX 5700 XT rating, still the last game has fallen from Radeon RX Vega 64 only 15% of the FPS. The result of the new model has been reduced from the Radeon RX 6600 requirements to the high level of the R&D game.

Among the green accelerators, the ratio between GeForce GTX TITAN and GeForce GTX 980 Ti was almost unchanged: the advantage of 980 Ti in old and new games was 74 and 73% of the average turnover rate respectively. Only the next generation was able to gain 84% of the bonus framer compared to GeForce GTX TITAN. While GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was separated from GTX 980 Ti by as much as 93% of the FPS, although in the old games these models separated a shorter distance of 73%. Only GeForce GTX 280 still outrun GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 4% of the average turnover frequency. GeForce RTX 3060 Ti also maintained the previous position at a distance of 9% of the range from GeForce RTX 2080.

♪ Conclusions

The percentage ratio between the results of the old and new games, summarized in the table below, is somewhat unexpected, but in other respects, a completely predictable picture. If you take the last generation's video maps on "red" and "green" chips, Radeon RX 6600 XT and GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, both devices in the current games have shown exactly the same ratio in speed as in the old taters, with related models of the past series: Radeon RX 5700 XT and GeForce RTX 2080.

In any event, even more recent models, such as Radeon RX 580 and GeForce GTX 980 Ti, seem more attractive in new games than in their predecessors, Radeon R9390X and GeForce GTX TITAN, which no longer receive the driver's targeted optimisations. The relative speed increase reached 10% and 3% of the FPS respectively, while Radeon RX 580 was once behind Radeon R9390X, but then fell out of the way. The potential of the red GPU has indeed opened with time, although, according to our data, the NVIDIA has achieved greater success.

Moreover, the lack of active support has led to the full acceptance of some of the modern tales.

In general, the trend is that each series of AMD and NVIDIA graphic processors in new games has a higher speed than their immediate predecessors, and the difference accumulates when you look at several GPU iterations in a row. The cumulative effect is so great that if in old games GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is about 3.4 times higher than in GeForce GTX TITAN, it is 4.5 times higher. The AMD boosters start from a higher position because Radeon R 390X is faster than Titan, and yet the ratio between Radeon RX 6600 XT and Radeon R9390X has changed from 78-101% in favour of the current model to 83–134%.

Only the samples of the last generation — Radeon 6,000 and GeForce 30 — have so far been removed from their analogs under the name Radeon 5000 and GeForce 20, but there are not many fundamental technical differences between them, and all the old games that we used in the tests have appeared before. Whatever the buyers may be, the old video cards will slow down even more over time for a variety of reasons: the software's focus on new iron, the support for more efficient branding technologies by the new GPU, and simply the higher workload that reveals the limitations of the previous architecture. On the other hand, for the huge IT industry's five-year period of acceleration on the Polaris/Vega platform of AMD and Pascal of NVIDIA — and this generation of chips that has remained in production for an unprecedented period of time — the lion's share of optimism has been overexaggered, so the rumor of premature obsolescence of GPU is still greatly exaggerated.
