iPad will soon replace the computer. New iPadOS 16 functions

A new version of iPadOS 16 has not added to the tablets the level of the variable locker screen in iOS 16. However, some things have been long awaited. For example, the custom application Weather has been waiting since the very first iPad. Some functions repeat them in iOS 16. For example, the general iCloud, Apple Passkey and advanced dictation will appear on both operations of the current year. Apple, as usual, is trying, thanks to innovations, to achieve perfect synchronization between its devices.

Stage Manager allows you to organize the workspace on small screens.

Let's look at all the functions for tablets that bring iPadOS 16, and separately for exclusive innovations for iPad Pro on the M1 processor, because Apple has prepared really cool things for them.

Which devices support iPadOS 16

iPad Pro 2021 supports all new iPadOS 16 functions.

Apple is different from other manufacturers because as long as possible, it provides its gadgets with support for new versions of the operating system. In a separate material, we talked about which devices will be updated to iPadOS 16.

  • iPad Air 4. iPad Air 5. iPad 5. iPad 6. iPad 7. iPad 8. iPad 9. iPad Mini 5. iPad Mini 6. iPad Pro 10.5 (2015). iPad Pro 12.9 (2017). iPad Pro 11 (2018). iPad Pro 12.9 (2018). iPad Pro 12.9 (2021).

As Apple usually does, not all devices will have full declared functionality, so there will be more desktop chips on tablets with an M1 processor.

iPadOS 16 — What's New

The weather finally appeared on the iPad, waiting for the Calculator to appear on the iPadOS 17.

Weather

It's been waiting for more than 10 years, and now it's happening. Apple has released its special app, Weather for tablets. And it's done it not just by extending the smartphone interface, but by creating it from scratch. The new program shows temperature and air quality, rainfall map, weather forecast by hour and day, wind speed and direction, UV index. All these data are placed on the same screen and do not require any additional display.

Most interestingly, most of these modules can be turned around and have more information on the indicator of interest.

Notes

iPadOS 16 will help correct even the doctor's handwriting.

The "Notes" application tries to improve handwritten notes by making the handwriting more neat. Now you can put the figures in the drawing area using both Apple Pencil and fingers. The free rotation of the added images is also maintained. As in iOS 16, "Notes" allows the password from the iCloud account to be used to block them.

Files and Contacts

"Films" and "Contacts" have been upgraded to "Desktop" level applications. The new status has resulted in the development of computer software. The "Film" navigation buttons have been replaced by a more user-friendly and easy search for folders and individual files.

The control elements, such as duplication, renaming, the ability to change the expansion of files and their properties, are now more accessible. External disks and cloud storage are shown separately on the sidebar. It has become possible to sort the contacts into the fast-track search lists. Now you can send emails directly to the entire contact group.

Small but important innovations include the following:

  • It has become possible to edit a message to iMessage or to cancel it. As we have explained in a separate article. In the mail application, you can plan or cancel an erroneous message. Live Text now recognizes the text and in the video. The object in the photo can be separated from the background and sent to the iMessage. You can now share pictures with your loved ones via the iCloud general mediat. Photos with specific people or made after a certain date will be downloaded automatically. Anyone who has access to the general mediatel will be able to edit them, save them on the device, add new ones or remove unnecessary photos. The Freeform application creates a space for working together where several users can simultaneously make some kind of recording or mark on the Internet. The advanced dict allows, without turning them off, to edit the text using a keyboard or Apple Pencil. In English, you will also have access to an automatic puncing with the introduction of an ID in an emody.

iPad on M1 is a new function

For the first time on iPad, active applications will work in selected small windows like Mac.

The tablets on the M1 processor have gotten close enough to the laptops in their capabilities, so Apple has provided them with exclusive functions that will be useful for professional work.

Reference Mode

On the iPad Pro 12.9 M1, the Likid Retina XDR display is available to Reference Mode. This mode allows an accurate color correction of the image on a screen calibrated according to popular color standards. Reference Mode is available and in Sidecar as an additional reference screen for Mac.

Through this function, those who work with photographs and images can do as thinly as possible with color and better meet customer requirements.

Display Zoom

Through the Display Zoom function, tablet users on the M1 processor can place more information on the screen. This function will be relevant when using multiple active windows. It is in this situation that the display of more data on the screen can be very useful.

For some tasks, including Display Zoom, more operational memory is required. A new version of the operating system will allow iPad to use part of the internal storage device as an RAM if there is no operational memory. We have considered this function in detail in a separate material.

With virtualization, some tablet operating memory can grow to 16 GB, which will be sufficient for most operations. However, with this function, Apple has already gotten into a small scandal. It will not be available on iPad Air with an M1 chip and 64 GB internal memory. Users who have acquired such a tablet setup are outraged by this approach of Coopertino.

The main innovation for tablets was still the State Manager. It makes it easy to group several different applications in separate windows without opening them to the entire screen. In the MacOS Ventura view, we explained in detail the principle of the Stage Manager. Let's recall what happens when you switch to this mode:

  • The active application is moved to the center of the screen. The background programs are collected in a column on the left of the active. The applications on the desktop are hidden, leaving only blurry wallpapers so that they do not interfere with the switch between windows.

The new function requires a very large amount of resources. Therefore, after testing tablets with the A-series Stage Manager was disabled for all devices except those operating on M1. However, the main oddity is that Apple reports that the Stage Manager cannot operate without additional virtualization of the OSI.

Stage Manager will not be available at all iPads

But on iPad Air, with an M1 and 64 GB memory chip, it works, and virtualization is not supported. After that, iPadOS 16 found a mode that allows you to activate the Stage Manager for all devices. We shared this in a separate material. It is hoped that Apple will come to mind and provide access to this function to more users. It is Stage Manager that brings tablets as close as possible to desktop computers.

iPadOS 16 has introduced a really new experience of using only tablets built on M1. For all other changes, there are more evolutionary changes. To call the Weather application a breakthrough doesn't turn language, much less, as one of my acquaintances said, "There's nothing to talk about without a calculator."

This update suggests that Apple is turning tablets on the A-series processors into history without giving them any more or less serious functions. I hope I'm wrong about my conclusions, but I'm sorry to say this, and there are a lot of users who use their devices to consume content. Let's believe that Coopertino won't forget about us.
